My First Half Marathon!!

I apologize for how LONG this post is going to be, but I’m one proud mama. So three weeks ago I accomplished something I have been working at for about a year. I ran the Mighty Niagara Half Marathon in Niagara Falls, NY! So the week of, i took it easy and tapered nicely. I also got to eat this the night before:

Cheese tortelleni in alfredo sauce and garlic pita with hummus! Proved to be a most effective carbo load meal! So I got a good nights sleep and was up the next day at 6am.  Ate a slice of wheat toast with peanut butter and a banana chopped up on it. It was difficult to eat, i was nervous and not at all hungry but i knew i had to. So my amazing fiance and I get to the race site about an hour early. And of course its pouring!

That’s ok, I trained in the rain a few times. So I line up at the finish line, kiss my fiance goodbye, and put my ipod on. I had a carefully crafted playlist that I ended up not really using at all.  There were pacers for my race, and I decided to follow the 2:10 woman.

And then the race began! It was thrilling, I had to tell myself to slow down a few times because with the adrenaline and everything I was fast outta the gates.  The sweet thing about my half marathon were the live musical acts at every mile. The first mile was a bagpipe band. It was sweet! My incredible fiance chased me around the course and was able to find me 3 times and then again at the finish line of course. He got some awesome videos of me along the way. Here are the professional pics:

the pics above are around mile 6. Clearly I’m really suffering… lol jk I was all smiles! I was right on pace for a 2:10 finish and super happy. I slowed a little once I hit mile 10 but still on pace for my goal. More professional pics:

So the above are around mile 8 and I’m still feelin good! Then shit got real lol. I slowed significantly, but thats ok. I still was enjoying myself. I thought it would be my feet that got sore, but they didn’t. Normally my long practice runs were on concrete and this is worse than the road surface I was running on for my half. So that was nice… but I got really annoying pains in my hip flexors? i think they’re called.  No side cramping though, i thank good food planning, and taking water and gatorade at every stop! These pics are from the finish line, where we were running through the woods, then it opens up to the HUGE crowd and cheering people and it was amazing and i had goosebumps and tears in my eyes:

I did it! I finished in 2:06:19, with a chip time of 2:05:30. I was greeted with my medal, then stumbled to a table and got a banana and bottle of water, and then my fiance found me. I sat in the grass immediately and scarfed my banana. I was starving!

I also changed outta my wet clothes, inhaled a few lara bars and like 3 hot dogs, and got myself two well deserved beers lol. Overall it was amazing experience, I learned so much about myself and truly fell even more in love with running, and just the spirit of my sport. Can’t wait for my next run!

So I’ve been not giving it 100% like all summer and it shows.

But I’m back baby.

Ran 7.5 miles tonight in an hour 13 min. Not my fastest pace, and it wasn’t without struggle. But I gotta get back in tippy top running form!

Less than 2 months til my first half marathon!

Sometimes runs are awesome

And sometimes they’re like todays.

Legs were sore and felt sooo heavy.

Had cramps in both my sides the entire time.

Almost stepped on a dead bird :(

And now I feel sick to my stomach. Did a lousy 2.5 miles in 23 minutes.

Anonymous asked: Congrats on the weight loss! You are doing great and I love your blog! What workouts have you been doing to lose the weight?

Answer:

Thank you, sweet anon! My workouts consist of mostly running (a long 10 miles once a week, then several smaller ones between 3 and 8 miles). I love running and I’m training for a half marathon in September.

In addition to a vigorous running schedule, I take spin classes about 3x a week and toning classes (butt legs thighs, total body sculpt) twice a week. I also add weight lifting regularly. It varies, but here’s a weekly break down:

Sunday: spinning in the morning, long run (10 miles) in the evening.

Monday: small run in the morning maybe, BLT class and spin class in the evening.

Tuesday: medium length run in the day, weight lifting in the evening.

Wednesday: small run, total body sculpt class, maybe a little weight lifting and stairmaster.

Thursday: day off, or maybe a spin class.

Friday: a day off, or a medium length run, maybe lifting.

Saturday: morning spinning, lifting.

Hope that helps :)
